Furminator, undercoat rake, or neither?
The right deshedding tool depends on the coat, not the brand. Match the tool first, then learn the two habits that keep any of them from wrecking the coat.

Four coats, four tools.
Undercoat rake: for true double coats
Huskies, shepherds, goldens, labs, corgis, anything that blows coat twice a year. The rounded pins reach through the guard hairs and pull dead undercoat out without cutting anything. This is the tool most shedding-dog owners actually want, and the one we reach for in the van. Buy one with rotating pins if your dog's undercoat packs tight.
Furminator-style blade: powerful, and easy to overdo
The famous yellow tool is a fine-toothed blade, not a brush. It removes undercoat fast, and it also cuts guard hair when you keep working one spot, which is why some coats look chewed after an enthusiastic session. Use light pressure, keep the stroke moving, and stop when the tool starts coming up empty. Never use it on a curly, wire, or single coat.
Slicker brush: the doodle and curly-coat answer
Doodles, poodles, bichons, and other curly single coats do not have undercoat to rake out, so a deshedding blade just cuts the coat you are trying to keep. A slicker brush plus a metal comb is the right kit: the slicker opens the coat and catches loose hair, the comb proves you got to the skin. If the comb snags, you found a mat forming.
Rubber curry: short single coats
Pitbulls, beagles, boxers, frenchies. There is no undercoat to rake, but short coats still drop hair year round. A rubber curry mitt used in circles at bath time lifts the dead hair with zero risk to skin. Skip anything with metal teeth on a coat this short.

Before you rake
The three mistakes that undo the work.
Raking a dirty, dry coat
Oil and dander glue dead undercoat in place. The same rake that struggles on a dirty coat sheds hair freely after a bath and a complete dry. If you only deshed once a season, do it the day of a bath, after the coat is bone dry, not before.
Working one spot until the skin goes pink
Brush burn is the most common injury we see from home deshedding. Count strokes: a few passes per area, then move on. If hair keeps coming forever, that is normal during coat blow, and a second short session tomorrow beats one long one today.
Raking over mats
A rake rips through a mat by tearing it out of the skin, which teaches the dog to fear every brush that comes after. If the comb will not pass, deal with the mat first. Our dematting guide covers which mats a brush can still save.

The honest answer
The best tool session starts with a bath.
Any rake works better on a clean, completely dry coat, and the tool that beats all of them is a forced-air blowout, which pushes dead undercoat out by the handful in a way no hand tool matches. That combination, wash, full dry, blowout, then the rake, is the deshedding treatment we run in the van.

Deshedding tool questions, answered.
For a true double coat, start with the undercoat rake: it pulls dead undercoat without cutting guard hair, so it is much harder to damage the coat with it. A furminator-style blade removes hair faster but cuts topcoat when overworked. For curly or single coats, neither: use a slicker brush and comb, because there is no undercoat to remove and a blade just cuts coat.
Yes. It is a blade, and with heavy pressure or repeated passes over one spot it cuts healthy guard hair and can irritate skin. On curly coats like doodles it should not be used at all. Light pressure, moving strokes, and stopping when the tool comes up mostly empty keeps it safe on the coats it suits.
During spring and fall coat blow, short sessions several times a week beat one marathon. The rest of the year, a weekly once-over holds most double coats. The single most effective session is the one right after a bath and a complete dry, because clean, dry coat releases dead hair most easily.
They help at the margin by loosening dead coat during the bath, but the mechanical work does the shedding: the bath, the complete dry, and the rake or blowout after. No shampoo stops a double coat from blowing coat on schedule.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet).
