The part nobody prices in
You still have to lift her into the car.
Every self-serve comparison focuses on the $20 and skips the logistics. A self-serve trip means lifting a dirty dog into your car, lifting them into a raised tub, lifting them out again wet, and lifting them back into the car. That is four lifts of an animal that may weigh 80 lbs and does not want to be lifted.
Our van has ramp entry, so the count is zero — they walk in and walk out. For owners with a bad back, and for senior dogs with hip or joint trouble, that single detail is usually the whole decision.

On the ticket price, clearly yes. Once you count the round trip, the hour of your own labor, and the fact that nails, ears and a proper de-shed are not included, the gap narrows a lot. Whether it closes entirely depends on what your time is worth to you.
Almost always the car. Getting a filthy dog into a vehicle, then a wet dog back into the same vehicle, is the part nobody enjoys — and it is the part that does not get easier as either you or the dog gets older.
You can, and for a small dog with a short coat it is genuinely manageable. It stops being manageable somewhere around 50 lbs, or when the dog objects, or when the bathroom needs a full clean afterward. Rarely. The dryers are usually shared, lower-powered, and on a timer, which is why so many self-serve dogs go home damp. Drying is the step that determines how long a dog stays clean-smelling, so skipping it undoes a lot of the wash.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!

We booked Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash for our 90-lb German Shepherd, Koda, who hates the groomer. Ace parked the van right in our driveway in Willow Glen, walked her up the ramp himself — no lifting, no cage, no other dogs — and I watched the whole wash from my doorstep.
