Fleas here run nearly year-round and peak in October and November, and local vets say this is a bad flea year. Here is the plan that actually ends an infestation: the dog, the house, and the yard, all in the same week.
In colder states, winter kills the outdoor flea cycle and everyone gets a reset. Santa Clara County does not get that reset. Our winters are mild enough that fleas stay viable outdoors essentially all year, which is why a January flea problem is completely normal here.
What we do get is a peak. The population builds quietly through the warm months, and by October and November every egg laid over the summer has matured. That is when the calls spike, the scratching starts, and the vet waiting rooms fill. This year local vets are reporting a heavier flea load than usual, so if your dog is suddenly chewing at the tail base this fall, trust the signal and act early.
The one rule that decides the outcome: treat the dog, the house, and the yard in the same week. Skip any one of the three and the survivors reinfest the other two within days. Every failed flea fight we hear about broke this rule.
A proper flea bath, with a medicated shampoo and the full contact time it needs, kills the adult fleas on your dog right now and washes out the flea dirt and loose eggs in the coat. That matters: it stops the biting today and it stops the dog reseeding the house while you work on the other two legs.
What a flea bath does not do is protect the dog tomorrow. Once the shampoo is rinsed out, a flea that jumps on next week is perfectly comfortable. So pair the bath with a vet-prescribed monthly preventive, which keeps killing new arrivals before they can lay eggs. Bath for the outbreak, prevention for the long run. You want both, and neither replaces the other.

The dog's bed, your bed if the dog sleeps on it, blankets, throw covers, the car seat cover. Hot wash and a full hot dry cycle. Heat kills the eggs and larvae that shampoo never touches.
Carpets, rugs, sofa cushions, under furniture, along baseboards. The vibration also tricks dormant pupae into hatching so they can actually be removed. Two weeks, not two days, because eggs keep hatching on their own schedule.
Toss the bag or dump the canister into an outdoor bin immediately. Fleas survive inside a vacuum and crawl right back out. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it undoes the rest.
Fleas do not live in open sun. They live where your dog naps: under shrubs, along fences, under the deck. A yard spray or granules on those spots breaks the outdoor half of the cycle.
Foggers and sprays can help in heavy infestations, but the boring steps above do most of the work, and no spray substitutes for the two weeks of vacuuming.
Black pepper-like specks on the skin, the bedding, and the floor that smear rust-red on a wet paper towel. That is digested blood, and a lot of it means a large established population, not a few hitchhikers.
Heavy infestations remove enough blood to cause anemia. Pale gums, weakness, or lethargy in a small dog with fleas is a same-day vet visit, not a bath.
Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva. One bite can set off flea allergy dermatitis: intense chewing, hair loss, and hot spots, usually above the tail. That needs a vet for the skin plus the full battle plan for the fleas.
Any of these means the vet comes first and the battle plan runs alongside whatever they prescribe. A bath is part of the answer, it is never the whole answer at this stage.
