Fleas here run nearly year-round and peak in October and November, and local vets say this is a bad flea year. Here is the plan that actually ends an infestation: the dog, the house, and the yard, all in the same week.
A dab of mineral oil in the corner of each eye keeps medicated shampoo from stinging if it runs down the face.
Hot water irritates skin that may already be reacting to flea bites; cold water keeps the shampoo from working properly. Lukewarm, all the way to the skin.
This is the step almost everyone rushes. The shampoo needs contact time on the skin to actually kill adult fleas, not just a quick lather and rinse.
Fleas run toward the head and tail as the coat gets wet. Lathering those areas early traps them before they can escape to dry fur.
Residue left in the coat causes itching that looks like more fleas but isn't. Rinse until the water runs clear, then rinse a little more.
A flea comb after the bath pulls out dead fleas and eggs the wash loosened but didn't fully remove, especially around the ears and tail base.
That gets today's fleas off the dog. It doesn't end an infestation on its own. The calendar and the triple treatment below cover the rest.
In colder states, winter kills the outdoor flea cycle and everyone gets a reset. Santa Clara County does not get that reset. Our winters are mild enough that fleas stay viable outdoors essentially all year, which is why a January flea problem is completely normal here.
What we do get is a peak. The population builds quietly through the warm months, and by October and November every egg laid over the summer has matured. That is when the calls spike, the scratching starts, and the vet waiting rooms fill. This year local vets are reporting a heavier flea load than usual, so if your dog is suddenly chewing at the tail base this fall, trust the signal and act early.
The one rule that decides the outcome: treat the dog, the house, and the yard in the same week. Skip any one of the three and the survivors reinfest the other two within days. Every failed flea fight we hear about broke this rule.
A proper flea bath, with a medicated shampoo and the full contact time it needs, kills the adult fleas on your dog right now and washes out the flea dirt and loose eggs in the coat. That matters: it stops the biting today and it stops the dog reseeding the house while you work on the other two legs.
One timing rule saves the whole plan: spot-on topicals like Frontline and Advantage spread through the coat oils, so a bath within about 48 hours before or after applying one strips it, and the treatment simply does not work. That is behind a lot of "the drops did nothing" stories. Bathe first, apply the topical two days later, and tell us at booking if your dog wears one so we schedule around it.
What a flea bath does not do is protect the dog tomorrow. Once the shampoo is rinsed out, a flea that jumps on next week is perfectly comfortable. So pair the bath with a vet-prescribed monthly preventive, which keeps killing new arrivals before they can lay eggs. Bath for the outbreak, prevention for the long run. You want both, and neither replaces the other.

The dog's bed, your bed if the dog sleeps on it, blankets, throw covers, the car seat cover. Hot wash and a full hot dry cycle. Heat kills the eggs and larvae that shampoo never touches.
Carpets, rugs, sofa cushions, under furniture, along baseboards. The vibration also tricks dormant pupae into hatching so they can actually be removed. Two weeks, not two days, because eggs keep hatching on their own schedule.
Toss the bag or dump the canister into an outdoor bin immediately. Fleas survive inside a vacuum and crawl right back out. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it undoes the rest.
Fleas do not live in open sun. They live where your dog naps: under shrubs, along fences, under the deck. A yard spray or granules on those spots breaks the outdoor half of the cycle.
Foggers and sprays can help in heavy infestations, but the boring steps above do most of the work, and no spray substitutes for the two weeks of vacuuming.
Black pepper-like specks on the skin, the bedding, and the floor that smear rust-red on a wet paper towel. That is digested blood, and a lot of it means a large established population, not a few hitchhikers.
Heavy infestations remove enough blood to cause anemia. Pale gums, weakness, or lethargy in a small dog with fleas is a same-day vet visit, not a bath.
Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva. One bite can set off flea allergy dermatitis: intense chewing, hair loss, and hot spots, usually above the tail. That needs a vet for the skin plus the full battle plan for the fleas.
Any of these means the vet comes first and the battle plan runs alongside whatever they prescribe. A bath is part of the answer, it is never the whole answer at this stage.

Ace came and gave my dog a much needed Pawdicure on my little Yorkie. He used the nail filer/buffer. I was very happy to see there was no clippers used.He was very professional and gentle with my girl. She usually hates her paws touched, but she was very calm with Ace. Although he arrived a little late due to a minor scheduling miscommunication, Ace was very kind, communicative, and especially patient with our dog, who can be anxious about grooming. Ace showed up on time .was ready to go . my dog was scared but after he got started my dog calmed down and enjoyed her bath. Ace is very polite and respectful . i have a friend who uses Ace to and loves him ! .for the price and the care you canβt beat itβ¦!!! 10/10 no doubt !
Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
