The real decision comes first: which mats can be saved with a brush, and which are better off shaved down instead of pulled out by hand. Here is how to tell the difference, the tools that don't hurt, and the technique that works.

Step one

How to tell if a mat can be saved.

The pinch test.

Pinch the mat between two fingers and gently pull the skin underneath. If the skin moves with the mat, it is anchored at the root and pulling it out by hand will hurt the dog. If the mat lifts away from loose skin, it is workable.

How close to the skin it sits.

A mat sitting on top of the coat, with visible fur underneath, is almost always fixable with a brush and patience. A mat that goes straight to skin, with no loose hair between, is a different job.

One mat vs. a matted-all-over coat.

A single mat behind an ear or under a collar is a ten-minute fix. A coat that is matted in sheets, especially after a missed season of brushing, is usually past the point where hand-dematting is kind to the dog, no matter how patient you are.

What to use

Slicker brush.

Fine, closely spaced wire bristles for working the outer edge of a mat loose. This is the first tool, not the last resort.

Dematting comb or rake.

Wider, angled teeth built to split a mat into smaller sections without pulling a fistful of coat at once.

Detangler spray.

A slip spray on the mat before you touch it cuts friction and makes every stroke less painful. Work it in and wait a minute before starting.

What to leave in the drawer: scissors.

Scissors near a mat that sits close to skin are the single most common home-injury risk in this whole process, because you cannot see the skin under the mat. If a mat needs cutting, that is a clipper job with a guard, done by someone who can feel where the skin is, not a scissor job done blind.

The technique

Step by step, without hurting the dog.

Work from the outer edge in.
Start at the loose end of the mat, not the root. Split it into small sections with the comb and brush each section out before moving toward the skin.

Short strokes, not long pulls.
Small, controlled strokes with the slicker brush loosen a mat gradually. One long yank on a rooted mat just transfers the pain straight to the skin.

Take breaks.
A few minutes on, then stop. A dog that is tolerating the first mat will start fighting by the fifth if there is no break, and a struggling dog is how accidental cuts happen.

Never bathe a matted coat first.
This is the fact most owners get backwards: water tightens a mat instead of loosening it, the same way a wet knot in rope is harder to untie than a dry one. Demat, or decide on a shave-down, before the bath, not after.
