Dog had a bad grooming experience? Here is what to do next.
He came home shaved to the skin again. Or she panicked, tried to throw herself off the table, and you got the call to come pick her up. Now you are telling everyone you are never going back. Before you decide what comes next, here is what probably happened, and how to get the coat and the trust back.
Why did the groomer shave my dog?
It looks brutal. It is usually the humane call.
Mats cannot be washed or brushed out once they are tight.
A mat close to the skin is a felted knot pulling on the skin every time the dog moves. Water tightens it rather than loosening it. Brushing out a coat matted in sheets means hours of pulling on skin that is already sore.
So the shave-down is usually the kind option.
Clipping under the mats takes minutes and removes the pulling. Trying to save the length would mean a long, painful session for the dog and a real risk of nicks. Most groomers who shaved your dog were choosing the dog's comfort over your photo of the haircut.
Where it goes wrong is the phone call that did not happen.
The fair complaint is usually not the shave itself. It is being surprised at pick-up. A good groomer checks the coat at drop-off and tells you before the clippers come out. If that did not happen, that is the conversation worth having with them.
If the shave-downs keep happening, the fix is not a different groomer. It is what happens to the coat between visits, which is the part you control.
If your dog panicked
A dog that panicked at the groomer is not a bad dog.
Think about what the visit asked of them: a car ride, a drop-off, a crate, a room of strange dogs and loud dryers, then a stranger holding them still on a raised surface. Any one of those can be enough for a nervous dog. Stacked together, a panic is not surprising, and a groomer who stopped and called you did the right thing.
What matters now is that the next experience is small and goes well. Fear is learned one visit at a time, and it is unlearned the same way.
What to do now
Skin, coat, trust, then prevention.
- 1Check the skin first.
Freshly shaved skin can look pink for a day or two. Raw patches, redness that spreads, scabs, or a dog that will not stop scratching or licking one spot is a vet visit, not a waiting game.
- 2Protect the coat while it grows back.
A shaved dog has lost its sun and cold protection. Shade on hot afternoons, a sweater on cold mornings. The coat grows back, but double-coated breeds can come in slowly or patchy, and if a patch has not started returning after a few months, ask your vet.
- 3Rebuild trust in small, boring doses.
A minute of brushing with treats. Touching the paws and ears for a few seconds, then stopping before the dog objects. The goal is for handling to become dull again. Do not follow a bad visit with another long appointment in the same kind of setting straight away.
- 4Stop the mats before the next visit.
Brush two to three times a week, down to the skin, not just over the top. Check the usual spots: behind the ears, under the collar, the armpits, the back of the legs. Dry the coat completely after every bath, because damp coat felts fast. Our demat guide has the full method.

Yes, in most dogs. Single-coated and curly coats usually grow back evenly. Double-coated breeds can grow back slowly or unevenly, and occasionally a patch stays thin. If an area has not started to come back after a few months, or the skin underneath looks irritated, ask your vet.
Tired, clingy, or a bit jumpy for a day is common after a stressful visit. Scratching at freshly clipped skin is also common for a day or two. Limping, a spot the dog will not let you touch, raw or bleeding skin, or behavior that has not settled in a few days is worth a vet visit.
