The coat is largely self-cleaning between blows. During a blow, frequency is what keeps the fur out of your house.
Most huskies land in our medium tier at $70. Big males over 60 lbs are $80. Flat by size, no surprises.
Twice a year, a husky releases its entire undercoat at once. It comes out in tufts you can pull free by the handful, and it lasts anywhere from two to six weeks. The spring blow drops the winter coat. The fall blow, which runs roughly September through October, clears the summer coat to make room for a new winter one. If you are reading this in fall, you are likely in it right now.
Brushing alone cannot keep up, because a brush only reaches the outer layer of a coat this dense. What works is a deshed bath: warm water and a deshedding shampoo loosen the dead undercoat at the skin, and then a high-velocity blow-dry pushes it out in sheets. One session removes the bulk of the loose undercoat that would otherwise spend the next month migrating onto your floors, your car, and your clothes. Home dryers and towels do not reach the undercoat, which is why a home bath during a blow often seems to change nothing.
Never shave a husky. The double coat insulates against heat as well as cold, and shaving destroys that system. The undercoat often grows back wrong or patchy, the dog loses its sun protection, and the shedding does not stop anyway. No reputable groomer will do it, and neither will we.
Deshed bath with a full high-velocity blow-dry each visit. Two or three visits usually cover a blow.
A standard wash and dry. The coat repels dirt well between baths, so more than this strips oils for no gain.
Bay Area winter mud and summer dry-grass outings do not wait for the calendar. A rinse-off bath between scheduled visits is fine.
An undercoat rake once a week keeps the coat moving. During a blow, daily brushing is not overkill.
If your vet has prescribed a medicated bathing plan for skin issues, that plan wins over this one.
Most of the year, honestly, no. The husky coat is close to self-cleaning. Dirt dries and falls out, there is little oil to go rancid, and a healthy husky can go months without smelling like anything. If you have a tub, patience, and a few hours for drying, the off-season baths are a reasonable home job.
Coat blow is where a professional deshed bath earns its money. The job that matters, clearing the released undercoat all the way down to the skin, depends on a forced-air dryer that home equipment cannot match. Ours runs in the van, so the fur that comes off stays in the van instead of in your bathroom. It costs $70 to $80 and takes about an hour, and it removes what would otherwise be weeks of vacuuming.
