Husky shedding: how to get through coat blow.
Most of the year a husky is an easy keeper. Then, twice a year, the whole undercoat lets go. Here is what that looks like, a week-by-week plan for it, and the one tool that actually keeps up.

Why huskies shed like this
An arctic coat, replaced all at once.
The husky coat is two layers doing two jobs. The topcoat is a weather shell. The undercoat is dense, woolly insulation. There is a steady shed all year, but the real event is the blow: each spring and fall the undercoat releases all at once. The rest of the year the coat is close to self-cleaning, which is why husky bathing can be so infrequent off season.
During a blow, the released undercoat does not fall out on its own schedule. It stays tangled in the coat and drifts out over weeks, onto floors, into cars, and in tumbleweeds along the baseboards. Brushing helps, but a brush mostly works the outer layer of a coat this thick. The deep removal happens when forced air is pushed down to the skin.
Never shave a husky. The double coat is heat protection as much as cold protection. We will not shave one, and no reputable groomer will either.
A coat blow plan
Week by week through a husky blow.
- Week 1
The first tufts
Clumps start standing out along the flanks and hips. Start daily brushing now with an undercoat rake, and book the de-shed for the next week or two, when the most undercoat is loose at once.
- The middle weeks
The peak
Tufts pull free by the handful and fur drifts through the house. This is when one de-shed removes the most. A second visit three or four weeks later catches what released since.
- The tail end
Patchy, then new coat
The dog can look moth-eaten for a while as new undercoat grows in. That is normal. Keep brushing until the tufts stop coming, then drop back to weekly.

The professional de-shed
What a de-shed does to a husky, in four steps.

Pre-bath brush-out
The loosest tufts come out dry first, so they do not felt together when the coat gets wet.
- 02
De-shedding shampoo and soak
Warm water and a de-shedding formula left to soak loosen the undercoat that is still anchored at the skin.
- 03
High-velocity blow-out in the van
The main event for a husky. Forced air pushed down to the skin blasts the released undercoat out in sheets, far more than any brush reaches, and gets the woolly layer fully dry.
- 04
Final brush and inspect
A finishing pass collects what the dryer lifted, plus a look at the skin under all that coat.

Our medium wash at $95 plus the $15 de-shedding treatment. Big males over 60 lbs are our large tier, $130 with the de-shed. Nail trimming and ear cleaning are included in every wash. A husky in full blow can take up to two hours, because the dryer stage is not something we rush, and every bit of it happens in the van at your driveway. The fur stays with us.

Husky shedding questions.
Usually two to six weeks, and huskies tend toward the longer end. Daily brushing and a de-shed near the peak compress it, because fur you remove on purpose is fur that does not drift out over the following month. Twice a year, expect it again.
Because coat change runs on daylight, not temperature. As the days shorten through September, the husky swaps its summer undercoat for a dense winter one, even when the South Bay is still warm. The spring blow works the same way in reverse as days lengthen.
During a blow, yes. Tufts that pull free with light fingers are released undercoat and pulling them is fine. What is not normal is bare skin underneath, redness, scabs, or a dog that is scratching constantly. That is worth a vet visit.
You can wash one at home, but the removal step is the dryer, and a home hair dryer or towel does not reach the undercoat. That is why a home bath during a blow often seems to change nothing, and a husky undercoat left damp is a problem of its own. Rake it dry instead, and let a forced-air dryer do the heavy removal.
No. The double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and protects the skin from sun. Shaving does not stop the shedding, and the undercoat can grow back patchy. A husky that looks hot needs its dead undercoat cleared so air can move through the coat.
