Every 4 to 5 weeks for most shepherds, stretching to 6 to 8 for indoor dogs. The trick with this breed is that the coat wants more washing and the skin wants less, and the schedule has to serve both.
A thick undercoat under a coarse guard coat. The nickname German shedder exists because that undercoat turns over all year.
Unlike breeds that shed on a schedule, a GSD drops undercoat every day of the year, then doubles down each spring and fall.
A deshed bath with a full blow-dry each visit. More often than that risks the famously touchy GSD skin.
Most german shepherds land in our large tier at $115. A smaller female under 60 lbs is $95. Flat by size, no surprises.
German shepherd owners do not ask whether the dog is shedding, they ask why it never stops. The GSD undercoat turns over all year, every day, and then blows out completely twice a year on top of that. Brushing helps, but a brush works the outer coat while the dead undercoat packs in at the skin. What clears it is a deshed bath: warm water and a deshedding shampoo release the dead undercoat where it is anchored, and a high-velocity dryer pushes air down to the skin and blasts it out in sheets. One session removes fur that a rake would chase for weeks, and it comes out in the van instead of across your house and car.
The natural response to endless fur is to wash the dog harder and more often, and with this breed that backfires. GSDs are one of the more skin-sensitive large breeds, prone to allergies, dryness, and hot spots, and harsh shampoo or a too-tight bath schedule strips the coat oils and flares exactly the itching and dandruff the owner was trying to fix. The answer is never more scrubbing. It is the right interval, a gentle fragrance-free product, a genuinely thorough rinse, and a complete dry, which is why cadence and product choice matter more for a shepherd than effort does.
Itching that outlives the bath is a vet conversation. If your shepherd is still scratching, flaking, or chewing hot spots a week after a proper gentle bath and full dry, the cause is usually allergy, diet, or parasites, not dirt. More washing will make that dog worse, not better.

A mostly-indoor shepherd that gets brushed at home can stretch the interval. Let the fur on your floors cast the vote.
When the undercoat releases in tufts, tighten the interval for a visit or two. Two deshed baths usually clear a blow.
Brushing between baths keeps the loose undercoat from packing in. During a blow, daily is not overkill.
If your vet has prescribed a medicated bathing plan for skin issues, that plan wins over this one.
An occasional rinse-off after mud or a roll in something is a fine home job, and if your shepherd is small, cooperative, and lightly coated, you may manage the full routine yourself. We would rather say that plainly than pretend every bath needs a professional.
The deshed bath is a different job. Getting a GSD undercoat clean, rinsed to the skin, and then completely dry takes a forced-air dryer that home equipment does not match, and a damp undercoat on this breed is how hot spots and the permanent wet-dog smell start. It is $115 for most shepherds, about an hour in the van at your driveway, the fur stays with us, and the skin gets a gentle product and a real rinse instead of another scrubbing.

I run Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash myself β Iβm the one who shows up at your door. Every visit is one dog at a time in the van at your curb: warm water, a full brush-out and a proper dry, with no salon drive and no cage waiting. The van is open to you the whole time β stand at the door and watch every minute if you like. Big dogs, heavy shedders and nervous seniors are the reason this service exists.

Ace was punctual & accommodating. He was friendly & outgoing not only me & my husband but toward the dogs as well, calling them by name on our very first booking. We booked Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash for our 90-lb German Shepherd, Koda, who hates the groomer. Ace parked the van right in our driveway in Willow Glen, walked her up the ramp himself β no lifting, no cage, no other dogs β and I watched the whole wash from my doorstep. He did such an amazing job with my dog! He came out looking so nice, clean, and well-groomed, but what stood out to me most was how happy and comfortable he seemed afterward. Ace came and gave my dog a much needed Pawdicure on my little Yorkie. He used the nail filer/buffer. I was very happy to see there was no clippers used.He was very professional and gentle with my girl. She usually hates her paws touched, but she was very calm with Ace. He has a great set up for his mobile grooming unit and I was able to stand van side and watch without getting in the way. We need to support small businesses and professional business owners. Overall, we had a very positive experience with our first mobile grooming appointment. Although he arrived a little late due to a minor scheduling miscommunication, Ace was very kind, communicative, and especially patient with our dog, who can be anxious about grooming. Ace showed up on time .was ready to go . my dog was scared but after he got started my dog calmed down and enjoyed her bath. Ace is very polite and respectful . i have a friend who uses Ace to and loves him ! .for the price and the care you canβt beat itβ¦!!! 10/10 no doubt !
Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
