What's actually going on
The four things behind most frenchie skin complaints.
Fold dermatitis (intertrigo).
Skin rubbing against skin traps moisture, tears, and saliva in a warm, low-oxygen crease where bacteria and yeast bloom. This is the root cause behind most day-to-day frenchie skin complaints, not a dirty coat.
Yeast infections (Malassezia).
Itchy, red bumps that get worse with moisture, often producing the musty or corn-chip smell frenchie owners report. This overlaps directly with the fold and tail-pocket routine on the breed page.
Allergies.
French Bulldogs run high rates of environmental allergies, which usually show up as skin symptoms, biting, chewing, dry itchy skin, occasional hair thinning, rather than sneezing or watery eyes the way allergies present in some other breeds.
Skin bumps: acne, pyoderma, or something else.
Canine acne shows up on the lips and muzzle. Bacterial pyoderma looks like raised, red, crusty bumps in the folds. Persistent or spreading bumps are a vet call, not a wait-and-watch.

Know the limits
When it's a vet issue, not a bath issue.
Redness, raw skin, discharge, an odor that returns within a day of cleaning, or a fold your dog won't let you touch. None of that resolves with more bathing, and pushing through it can irritate an already-compromised fold further. Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
