Why corgis shed like this
A herding coat that never got scaled down.
A corgi carries a dense, woolly undercoat under a weather-shedding topcoat, the same two-layer system as a husky or a german shepherd. The undercoat turns over every day, and each spring and fall it releases all at once in a coat blow. In the Bay Area the fall one lands in September and October, when shortening days trigger the change even though the weather is still warm. Our fall shedding guide explains the daylight trigger.
What makes corgi shedding feel worse than it looks on paper is where the fur sits. It is concentrated in a few thick areas on a dog built close to the ground, and it comes off at floor level, right where it gets tracked through the house. Where the fur hides
Four spots that hold most of a corgi's loose coat.
The pants
The long fluff on the back of the thighs, the famous corgi rear. It is the densest spot on the dog and the first place loose undercoat packs and tangles.
The chest ruff
The thick bib at the front. It sheds heavily during a blow and is easy to miss when you brush along the back.
Belly and underside
A corgi rides low, so the belly picks up whatever it walks over and holds shed coat against the skin. Roll the dog over and brush it.
Behind the ears
Soft, fine coat that turns into small knots when loose undercoat is left in it.
What works at home
Short sessions, often, on your lap.
The advantage a corgi owner has over a husky owner is size. You can brush a corgi on your lap or on a towel on the floor in ten minutes. Two or three times a week, run an undercoat rake through the pants, chest, and back, then a slicker brush to tidy up, then roll the dog over for the belly. During a blow, do the same routine daily. Brush a dry coat, never a damp one.

What a de-shed does for a corgi, step by step.

Pre-bath brush-out
We start with the pants and the chest ruff, where a corgi holds the most loose undercoat, and loosen it before any water.
02
De-shedding shampoo and soak
Worked down to the skin, including the belly and underside a low dog drags through everything, then left to dwell so the anchored undercoat lets go.
03
High-velocity blow-out in the van
Forced air pushes the released undercoat out of a coat far denser than the dog's size suggests, and dries it down to the skin.
04
Final brush and inspect
A last pass through the pants and ruff, and a look at the skin, including the underside that owners rarely see.

Nail trimming and ear cleaning are included in every wash, and it all happens in our van at your driveway, so the fur never reaches your floor.

Because a corgi has a big dog's coat. Corgis were bred to herd cattle outdoors in Welsh weather, and they kept the full double coat that job needed, on a body a fraction of the size. So you get a steady daily shed plus two full coat blows a year, from a dog that fits under one arm. It is normal for the breed.
Both are double-coated and both shed heavily, with the same spring and fall blows. The home routine and the de-shed are the same for either one.
A fluffy corgi has a longer coat than the standard, with extra feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and pants. The long coat holds shed undercoat longer and tangles more easily, so it needs more frequent brushing, especially behind the ears and in the pants. It still sheds and still blows coat.
An undercoat rake for the loose undercoat, then a slicker brush to tidy the topcoat and the fluffy areas. A furminator-style blade works but is easy to overdo on a small dog. Our deshedding tools guide covers how to use each without damaging the coat.
No. Shaving a double coat does not stop the shedding, it only makes the hair shorter, and the undercoat can grow back patchy. It also removes the heat and sun protection the coat gives. Removing the dead undercoat is the fix, not removing the coat.

One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet).
