Cavapoo grooming
Cavapoo grooming: small dog, silky ears, a coat that tangles quietly.
A cavapoo needs a salon trim every 6 to 8 weeks or so. In between, the Cavalier ears and legs tangle first, and the poodle curl holds onto every loose hair. A few short brushing sessions a week and a proper bath with a full dry keep it manageable. We do the bath, brush-out, ears, and nails. We do not do the trim.
Why this coat mats
Cavalier feathering plus poodle curl.
The Cavalier King Charles side brings long, silky feathering on the ears, legs, and chest. The poodle side brings a low-shed coat that keeps loose hair trapped instead of letting it fall out. Put them together and the hair that would have shed stays in the coat, and the fine feathering tangles wherever it moves or rubs. The whole dog is small, so the mats are small too, which is exactly why they get missed.
Ear feathering
The long, silky Cavalier ear hair dangles into food and water bowls and tangles where the ear leather folds. The single most common cavapoo mat.
Behind the ears and under the collar
Fine hair plus a collar or harness rubbing it all day.
Legs and armpits
Small legs move a lot and get little attention. Leg feathering picks up burrs and knots fast.
Around the eyes
Tear staining and eye gunk set into the face hair if nobody wipes it.

At home, between trims
A cavapoo brushing routine that fits on your lap.
Tools: a small slicker brush and a metal comb with fine teeth for the ears and face.
- 1Ten minutes, 2 to 3 times a week.
A cavapoo is small enough to brush on your lap. A short, regular session beats a long weekly battle, and it keeps the dog used to being handled.
- 2Slicker brush first, in small layers.
Hold the coat up, brush the layer underneath from the skin out, drop the next layer. On a small dog the layers are thin, so go gently; the skin is close.
- 3Comb every ear, every time.
Run a fine-tooth metal comb through the ear feathering from the base to the tips. If it snags, work the snag loose with the tip of the comb before it tightens.
- 4Finish with the comb over the whole dog.
If the comb reaches the skin everywhere, you are done. Anywhere it catches is next week's mat.
Between baths
How to keep a cavapoo clean between baths.
Ear tips after meals
Wipe the ear feathering with a damp cloth if it has been in the food or water bowl, dry it, and comb it. A snood or a narrow, deep bowl keeps the ears out of dinner.
Face and eyes
Wipe under the eyes daily with a damp cloth so tear staining does not set. If tearing suddenly increases or an eye looks red, ask your vet.
Wet walks
Towel the legs and belly, dry the ears, and finish with a hair dryer on cool while you comb. A small wet dog that air-dries curled up in a ball tangles where it curls.
Spot baths
A dirty rear end or muddy feet can be rinsed in the sink without a full bath. Dry and comb the washed area the same day.

Where we stop
When a cavapoo's mats need the groomer first.
A knot in the ear feathering or behind a leg is a normal part of our brush-out. A solid mat against the skin is not, and on a small dog the skin is thin and close. Water tightens mats and pulling them out hurts, so we check before the bath and tell you if it needs your groomer's clippers first. Ear mats close to the ear leather are always a groomer job, never a scissors-at-home job.

Most cavapoos see a groomer for a trim every 6 to 8 weeks, get a bath every 4 to 6 weeks if the coat is kept short (every 2 to 3 for a long coat), and need brushing at home 2 to 3 times a week. The longer you keep the coat, the more of the maintenance moves to the brush.
No. We are wash-only: brush-out, bath, conditioner, full dry, nail trim, and ear cleaning. The trim stays with your groomer. Our bath between trims keeps the coat and ears in shape until the next cut.
Because it is a mix of a silky, wavy Cavalier coat and a curly poodle coat, and individual dogs land anywhere between the two, sometimes both on one dog. Straighter, silkier cavapoo coats tangle at the ears and legs; curlier coats mat closer to the skin all over. Brush both the same way: layers, then the comb check.
Often yes. A cavapoo fits in a sink, and a short, well-brushed coat is a reasonable home job. The parts people skip are brushing out before the water, drying the coat fully instead of leaving it damp, and the ears. If those are where it goes wrong at your house, that is where a visit from us helps.
They need attention. The floppy, heavily feathered ears hold moisture and hair near the ear canal. We check and clean the ears at every wash, and it is included in the price. If you notice redness, odor, or head shaking, that is a question for your vet rather than a bath.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
