A yorkie's coat grows continuously like human hair and carries almost no undercoat, which is why the breed feels so light in your hands. It's also why the coat needs steady upkeep: there's no shedding cycle to clear out loose hair, so anything that tangles stays tangled until it's brushed or bathed out. The texture is finer and silkier than a shih tzu's or a poodle's, which means it catches on itself a little more easily, especially around the legs and behind the ears where the hair is thinnest.
The 3 to 4 week bath window keeps the coat manageable between the daily brushing a yorkie really needs. Older yorkies, roughly 8 and up, often do fine on a slightly longer interval since their coat growth and activity level both slow down, but that's a stretch from the baseline, not a reason to skip brushing.
Brush before the bath, not after. Water tightens any tangle already in the coat, so a quick brush-through before the wash is what actually prevents a mat, not the shampoo.

Does a yorkie need professional bathing?
Not strictly. A yorkie fits easily in a sink, and a careful owner who brushes thoroughly before every wash and dries completely afterward can keep a young, cooperative dog on schedule at home.

Every 3-4 weeks once they're past their second vaccination round, same as an adult, just with a shorter, gentler session. Yorkie puppies lose heat fast because they're tiny, so keep the room warm and the bath quick, and use it as an early lesson that baths are calm and routine.
About the same as shih tzus and Maltese, since all three share the same continuously growing hair coat that mats instead of sheds. Where yorkies differ is coat texture: it's finer and silkier, which tangles a little easier, so consistent brushing between the 3-4 week baths matters more than it does for some other breeds.
Not really. A clean, dry yorkie has very little odor. The usual causes when one shows up early are dental disease, which is extremely common in toy breeds and smells from the mouth, ear buildup, or a coat that got wet and didn't dry all the way through. If a full dry bath doesn't fix it, that's worth a vet visit rather than an extra wash.
You can, but the coat mats faster than most owners expect once you go past 4-5 weeks, especially anywhere there's friction like behind the ears or under the legs. If your yorkie is in a short "puppy cut" rather than long coat, you can usually stretch a bit further since there's less length to tangle.
