Every 3 to 4 weeks, the highest cadence of any coat type, and the same answer holds for Maltese and Shih Tzus. These coats grow like hair and mat instead of shedding, which changes every rule, including the big one: never bathe over a mat.

A poodle's coat grows continuously, like human hair, and the hairs that die do not fall to the floor. They stay caught in the living coat, and every day of wear, the collar, the harness, a good roll in the grass, twists them a little tighter around their neighbors. That is a mat: not dirt, just trapped dead hair felting together. It is why the interval is every 3 to 4 weeks, the highest of any coat type, and why the schedule compounds. Skip one cycle and you have not fallen one bath behind, you have given every small tangle six to eight weeks to tighten into felt that no brush can save. Maltese and Shih Tzus run on exactly the same clock, because silky and long coats mat by the same mechanism the curl does.
The bath itself has an order of operations. Brush and comb to the skin first, because water is not neutral to a mat: a wet mat shrinks as it dries and pulls tighter, which is how a home bath turns a manageable tangle into a solid pelt. Then wash, then dry with moving air while brushing the coat straight, because a curly coat left to air-dry curls around its own tangles and sets them. Between professional haircuts, a maintenance bath at the halfway point, around week 3 or 4 of a 6 to 8 week clip cycle, is what protects the haircut you already paid for. White-faced Maltese and Shih Tzus get one extra line item: a daily wipe under the eyes so tear stains never get the chance to set.
Never bathe over mats. Water tightens them. Every mat needs to be brushed or combed out before the coat gets wet, and a mat that will not comb out needs clippers, not shampoo. If we find solid matting at a wash, we will tell you honestly that it is a groomer or vet job first rather than soak it and make it worse.
Brush before the water, wash, then dry straight with airflow and a brush. Air-drying a curly coat sets it into new tangles.
We do washes, not haircuts. The clip schedule belongs to your groomer, and our maintenance bath slots between their visits.
Brush to the skin, then follow with a metal comb. If the comb catches, a mat is starting. Surface brushing alone hides mats until they are solid.
A quick wipe under the eyes keeps tear staining from setting into a Maltese or Shih Tzu face between baths.

A hair coat done right means a full brush-out before the water, a thorough wash, and a straight blow-dry with a brush moving through the coat the whole time. Done wrong, the bath itself creates the mats. Most home setups lack the dryer, and most schedules lack the ninety minutes, which is why home-bathed poodles so often arrive at the groomer matted.

I run Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash myself β Iβm the one who shows up at your door. Every visit is one dog at a time in the van at your curb: warm water, a full brush-out and a proper dry, with no salon drive and no cage waiting. The van is open to you the whole time β stand at the door and watch every minute if you like. Big dogs, heavy shedders and nervous seniors are the reason this service exists.

We booked Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash for our 90-lb German Shepherd, Koda, who hates the groomer. Ace parked the van right in our driveway in Willow Glen, walked her up the ramp himself β no lifting, no cage, no other dogs β and I watched the whole wash from my doorstep. He did such an amazing job with my dog! He came out looking so nice, clean, and well-groomed, but what stood out to me most was how happy and comfortable he seemed afterward. Ace came and gave my dog a much needed Pawdicure on my little Yorkie. He used the nail filer/buffer. I was very happy to see there was no clippers used.He was very professional and gentle with my girl. She usually hates her paws touched, but she was very calm with Ace. He has a great set up for his mobile grooming unit and I was able to stand van side and watch without getting in the way. We need to support small businesses and professional business owners. Overall, we had a very positive experience with our first mobile grooming appointment. Although he arrived a little late due to a minor scheduling miscommunication, Ace was very kind, communicative, and especially patient with our dog, who can be anxious about grooming. Ace showed up on time .was ready to go . my dog was scared but after he got started my dog calmed down and enjoyed her bath. Ace is very polite and respectful . i have a friend who uses Ace to and loves him ! .for the price and the care you canβt beat itβ¦!!! 10/10 no doubt !
Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
