How often should you bathe a shih tzu?

The real problem
A coat that mats instead of sheds.
A shih tzu's coat behaves like human hair, not fur. It grows continuously and almost nothing falls out on its own. That sounds like an easy trade for a low-shed house, but the loose hair a shedding breed would drop onto the floor stays put on a shih tzu, tangling with whatever grows in next to it. Skip a bathing cycle and those small tangles have weeks to compound into a real mat.
The 3 to 4 week bath cadence is not arbitrary. It is the window that keeps the coat brushable before mats set in behind the ears, under the collar, and in the armpits, the friction points where tangles start first. Bathing without brushing first makes it worse, not better, since water tightens a mat rather than loosening it.
A missed cycle usually means a shave-down. Once mats set in past a certain point, a groomer can't safely brush or cut around them, and the only remaining option is to shave the coat short. Staying on schedule is what keeps that decision off the table.

Does a shih tzu need professional bathing?
Not strictly. A shih tzu is small enough for a sink, and if you brush thoroughly before every bath and dry completely afterward, a home wash on a strict 3 to 4 week schedule can work fine for a young, cooperative dog.

A healthy, dry shih tzu shouldn't smell much between the 3-4 week baths. When it does, the usual causes are a coat that got damp and didn't fully dry, food or drool caught in the beard, or dental disease, which is common in small breeds and smells from the mouth, not the coat. If the smell shows up well before the next scheduled bath, check the beard and the skin under the coat first.
The coat mats. Because shih tzu hair grows continuously and doesn't shed, loose hair that would normally fall out on a shedding breed instead stays trapped and tangles with new growth. One skipped cycle is often recoverable with a longer brush-out; two or more usually means the groomer has to shave the mats out rather than cut them, which is the outcome this schedule is built to avoid.
About every 4 weeks once they're past their second round of vaccinations, with a damp cloth for small messes in between. Puppy coat and skin are more sensitive than an adult's, so keep the water warm and the session short. The habit that matters most at this age is making bath time boring and calm, since this breed will be getting baths every few weeks for its entire life.
Before, always. Water tightens a mat instead of loosening it, so any tangle that goes into the tub wet comes out worse, sometimes bad enough to need shaving out. A full brush and comb-through before the water starts is what actually protects the coat, not the shampoo.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
