What a flea bath for your dog costs in San Jose.
Local prices from Bay Area grooming menus, surveyed September 2026, and the honest answer on what a flea bath can and can't do for the money.
Short answer: local menus put the flea treatment at a median of $20, with published prices from $10 to $50. It kills the fleas on your dog today. It does not stop new ones tomorrow.

The lines mix standalone flea baths, flea shampoo upgrades and flea packages, so read them as the flea part of the bill: many shops charge the bath on top. 131 of the 309 groomers we checked publish no prices at all, which is a hard place to be when you found fleas this morning and want to know what fixing it costs.
Before you pay for one
A flea bath is a treatment, not prevention.
A medicated flea shampoo, left on for its full contact time, kills the adult fleas on your dog and washes out the flea dirt in the coat. That stops the biting today and stops your dog carrying fleas back into the house while you deal with the rest.
It does nothing about the eggs and larvae in your carpet and yard, and it leaves no protection behind once it is rinsed out. Keeping fleas off for good takes a monthly preventive. Which one, and whether it is safe alongside anything else your dog takes, is a question for your vet.
Pale gums, weakness or lethargy in a small dog or puppy with fleas needs a vet the same day, not a bath. The full dog, house and yard plan is in our flea season battle plan.
What moves the price
Four things behind a flea bath price.
What “flea treatment” means on that menu.
One shop's flea line is a medicated shampoo. Another's is a flea spray after the bath, or a package with other extras. They are different products doing different jobs, so ask which one the price buys.
Contact time.
A flea shampoo has to sit on the skin for several minutes to kill the adult fleas. A quick lather and rinse is cheaper to do and does much less.
Your dog's size and coat.
A big, thick-coated dog takes more shampoo and more time to get down to the skin everywhere. That usually shows up in the bath price the treatment is added to.
How bad it is.
A few fleas is a bath. Raw, scabby skin, hair loss or pale gums is a vet visit first. No groomer's price covers that, and none should try to.
Don't pay for it twice
How not to waste money on fleas.
- Treat the house the same week. Hot-wash the bedding and vacuum daily. Skip this and you are paying for a second flea bath.
- Space it from a spot-on. A bath too close to a topical can wash the topical out. Check the timing with your vet.
- Ask what the flea line buys. A shampoo, a spray and a package are not the same thing at the same price.
- Use the bath for the outbreak, not the year. Repeated flea baths are not a prevention plan. Your vet can recommend one that is.

The flea shampoo is a flat $15 added to the wash. That covers the medicated shampoo and the contact time it needs. The wash already includes the brush-out, nail trim and ear cleaning, so the total is the whole visit.

How we measured
Where these numbers come from.
In September 2026 we collected the published price lists of 309 Bay Area grooming businesses. Every menu line that named a flea service counted, whatever form it took, so the 45 is price lines, not businesses. Lines priced like a full service were left out, and so were our own prices. Across 45 published flea-treatment prices in the Bay Area, the median is $20, with a range of $10 to $50 (September 2026). Ours adds $15 to the wash, so the total depends only on your dog's size.
No. It kills the adult fleas on your dog during the bath. Once it is rinsed out, a flea that jumps on tomorrow is fine. Prevention means a monthly preventive, so ask your vet which one suits your dog.
Timing matters. A bath close to a spot-on topical can strip it from the coat oils, so the two are usually spaced about 48 hours apart. Check the timing with your vet, and tell us at booking so we schedule around it.
Because most of the fleas were never on the dog. Eggs, larvae and pupae live in carpet, bedding and shady spots in the yard. Treat the dog, the house and the yard in the same week, or the survivors restock the dog within days.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
