What a deshedding treatment costs in San Jose.
Real prices from Bay Area grooming menus, surveyed September 2026, and what you actually get for them.
Short answer: a median of $25 on top of the bath, with published prices from $10 to $55. Ours is a flat $15 added to the wash, at every size.

Only 31 price lines named deshedding at all, out of 309 businesses checked. 131 of them publish no prices of any kind, so for many local groomers the only way to learn what a deshed costs is to call.
What you are paying for
A brush-out is not a deshed.
Every bath should come with a brush-out, which clears the loose surface coat. A deshedding treatment goes after the undercoat underneath: a deshedding shampoo left to soak so the dead undercoat lets go, then a high-velocity dryer that blows it out of the coat, then a finishing brush. That undercoat is what ends up on your couch.

What moves the price
Four things behind a deshed price.
How thick the undercoat is.
A husky or a shepherd carries far more undercoat than a short-coated lab, and all of it has to be loosened and blown out. More coat means more shampoo, more soak time and much more drying.
How long since the last one.
Undercoat that has been packing in for months comes out slower than a coat on a regular schedule. The first treatment after a long gap is the hardest one.
The time of year.
Double-coated dogs blow their coat in spring and again in fall. In the Bay Area the fall blow lands in September and October, when there is the most undercoat to remove.
How it is priced.
Some groomers charge a flat add-on, some scale it by size, and some fold it into a package with a bath they also price by size. Compare the total for your dog, not the add-on line alone.
Spend it where it counts
How not to overpay for deshedding.
- Skip it on single-coated dogs. Poodles, shih tzus and bichons don't carry the undercoat it removes.
- Time it to the coat blow. Book it for the spring and fall blows, when there is real undercoat to remove. The fall shedding guide has the calendar.
- Brush between visits. A short weekly session with an undercoat rake stretches the gap between treatments.
- Ask for the total. A cheap deshed on an expensive bath is not a deal. Ask what your dog's full visit comes to.

The deshed is a flat $15 added to the wash. The wash already includes the brush-out, nail trim and ear cleaning, so the total below is the whole visit.

How we measured
Where these numbers come from.
In September 2026 we collected the published price lists of 309 Bay Area grooming businesses. Every menu line that named deshedding counted, so the 31 is price lines, not businesses. Lines priced like a full service were left out, and so were our own prices. Bath, groom and city medians are in the full Bay Area grooming price survey.

Across 31 published deshedding prices in the Bay Area, the median add-on is $25, with a range of $10 to $55 (September 2026). Ours adds $15 to the wash, the same at every size.
Only if it has a double coat: huskies, goldens, shepherds, labs and similar breeds. Single-coated dogs like poodles, shih tzus and bichons don't carry the undercoat this treatment removes, so a standard wash does the job and you save the add-on.
Every 4 to 6 weeks during the heavy spring and fall shedding seasons, and every 6 to 8 weeks the rest of the year. Brushing at home in between makes each treatment go further.
No treatment stops a healthy double-coated dog from shedding. It pulls out the dead undercoat that would otherwise come loose around your house over the following weeks. If shedding comes with bald patches, sores or constant scratching, ask your vet.
No, it is the wrong fix. A double coat helps protect a dog from heat and sun, and we never shave one. We are a wash service and don't do haircuts at all.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
