How often should you bathe a shiba inu?
Every 3 to 4 months most of the year, a nearly self-cleaning coat doesn't ask for much. The real job is the twice-yearly blowout, when the undercoat lets go all at once.

The real problem
Nearly self-cleaning, until the coat lets go all at once.
Shibas are one of the more genuinely low-maintenance coats on our list. The dense double coat resists dirt well enough that a shiba can go three or four months between baths and still look and smell clean, closer to how a cat maintains itself than most dogs. For most of the year, more frequent bathing doesn't buy you anything except stripped coat oils.
Twice a year, that changes. Spring and fall, the undercoat releases in a concentrated burst that can run for a few weeks, husky-style but on a much smaller dog. Brushing alone struggles to keep up because it only reaches the outer layer. A deshed bath, warm water and a deshedding shampoo followed by a forced-air dry, clears the released undercoat down to the skin in a way home brushing can't match.
Never shave a shiba for shedding. The double coat regulates temperature in both directions. Shaving risks permanent coat damage and doesn't stop the undercoat from growing back and shedding again.

Does a shiba inu need professional bathing?
Off-season, honestly, no. A shiba's coat is close to self-cleaning, and if you have a tub and some patience, the every-few-months baths are a reasonable home job.
Blowout season is where a professional deshed bath earns its cost. Our forced-air dryer clears the released undercoat down to the skin in the van, so the fur that comes off stays with us instead of in your house. $75 to $95, under an hour, at your driveway.

Mostly, yes. The double coat repels dirt well and a healthy shiba grooms itself somewhat like a cat, which is why most breed sources point to brushing over bathing for day-to-day maintenance. Outside of a blowout, every 3 to 4 months is genuinely enough for most shibas.

No. The double coat insulates in both directions, and shaving it risks permanent damage to the coat and the dog's ability to regulate temperature. It also doesn't stop shedding, since the undercoat still grows and releases underneath.
Self-cleaning handles ordinary dirt, not everything. Rolling in something genuinely foul, a wet coat that didn't fully dry, or dental and ear issues can all produce a smell that brushing won't fix. A targeted rinse or full bath handles those cases even outside the normal 3-4 month schedule.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
