The real problem
The coat is the easy part. The wrinkles are the job.
A pug's short coat rinses clean in minutes, no different from most short-haired breeds. What sets this breed apart is the deep facial wrinkles, folds of skin that trap moisture, food debris, and dead skin in a warm, dark pocket every single day. Left alone, that combination is close to ideal conditions for yeast and bacteria, which is why a lot of pug skin issues start in the folds long before the rest of the dog looks anything but clean.
The fix is direct and unglamorous: wipe the wrinkles out and dry them, not just at bath time but a few times a week in between. Some pugs also carry a small tail pocket, a skin fold at the base of the tail, that traps moisture the same way. Neither problem shows up in the coat itself, which is why a bath schedule alone doesn't cover this breed's real maintenance need.

Generally yes. Pugs are prone to skin irritation and allergies more than many short-coated breeds, which is why we use a gentle shampoo and don't recommend pushing the bath interval shorter than every 3 weeks without a specific reason.
Every 4 weeks or so once they're past their second vaccination round, with wrinkle wipes started early so the dog gets used to the routine. Pug puppies have the same fold-care needs as adults, just with smaller, gentler hands doing the work.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
