Every 4 to 6 weeks, which is the pace of the coat's own oil cycle. Labs carry more coat oil than almost any breed, and whether your lab smells fresh or like a wet gym bag comes down to staying ahead of it.

A labrador's coat is a piece of working equipment. The skin keeps it loaded with oil so a dog bred to fetch ducks out of cold water can shake mostly dry and stay warm, and on a fresh coat that oil has almost no smell. Then the lab does lab things. It swims in whatever water is available, rolls in whatever the lawn offers, and over four to six weeks the oil ages, binds dirt, and goes stale. That is the wet-dog smell that lives in the couch and the car, and it is why a lab can smell doggy a week after a quick rinse: the rinse never touched the oil layer.
Beating it takes a wash with actual cutting power. That means a degreasing-strength dog shampoo worked through the dense double coat, left long enough to lift the old oil, and then rinsed out completely, because shampoo residue in a coat this thick becomes its own smell within days. Then the part home baths miss: a full blow-dry to the skin. A damp lab undercoat grows the same yeast a damp golden's does, and toweling a water-resistant coat dries the outside while the underlayer stays wet. Wash on the oil's schedule, every 4 to 6 weeks, and the smell never gets the head start it needs.
Do not overcorrect with weekly baths.Stripping the oil faster than the skin can replace it leaves a lab flaky, itchy, and, counterintuitively, oilier, because the skin ramps up production to compensate. Every 4 to 6 weeks with the right product beats every week with a harsh one.

A lab that swims weekly or has a talent for finding dead things runs its oil cycle faster. Tighten the interval to match the dog.

The rinse-offs, no. A lab that just swam or found mud needs fresh water and a towel the same day, and that is a hose-and-driveway job any owner can do. If you have a tub that fits a 75 pound dog that loves water, the occasional full home bath is realistic too.

Cutting through the oil layer, rinsing a dense double coat truly clean, and drying it to the skin with forced air is an hour of equipment-heavy work, and it is the difference between a lab that smells like nothing and one that smells like a lab. I run Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash myself β Iβm the one who shows up at your door. Every visit is one dog at a time in the van at your curb: warm water, a full brush-out and a proper dry, with no salon drive and no cage waiting. The van is open to you the whole time β stand at the door and watch every minute if you like. Big dogs, heavy shedders and nervous seniors are the reason this service exists.

Ace was punctual & accommodating. He was friendly & outgoing not only me & my husband but toward the dogs as well, calling them by name on our very first booking. Dogs came home clean & unstressed which is never the case when theyβre washed at the groomerβs shop, around other dogs. Highly recommend.
We booked Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash for our 90-lb German Shepherd, Koda, who hates the groomer. Ace parked the van right in our driveway in Willow Glen, walked her up the ramp himself β no lifting, no cage, no other dogs β and I watched the whole wash from my doorstep. He did such an amazing job with my dog! He came out looking so nice, clean, and well-groomed, but what stood out to me most was how happy and comfortable he seemed afterward. Ace came and gave my dog a much needed Pawdicure on my little Yorkie. He used the nail filer/buffer. I was very happy to see there was no clippers used.He was very professional and gentle with my girl. She usually hates her paws touched, but she was very calm with Ace. He has a great set up for his mobile grooming unit and I was able to stand van side and watch without getting in the way. We need to support small businesses and professional business owners. Overall, we had a very positive experience with our first mobile grooming appointment. Although he arrived a little late due to a minor scheduling miscommunication, Ace was very kind, communicative, and especially patient with our dog, who can be anxious about grooming. He took the time to help him feel comfortable, completed the grooming efficiently, and our dog seemed happy and in great spirits afterward. We really appreciated his gentle approach and care!

Ace showed up on time .was ready to go . my dog was scared but after he got started my dog calmed down and enjoyed her bath. Ace is very polite and respectful . i have a friend who uses Ace to and loves him ! .for the price and the care you canβt beat itβ¦!!! 10/10 no doubt !
Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
