How often should you bathe a labradoodle?

The real problem
Low shed sounds low maintenance. It isn't.
A labradoodle's wool or fleece coat, inherited from the poodle side, barely sheds. That sounds like a win until you realize where the loose hair actually goes: it stays trapped in the coat instead of falling to the floor, and over time it tangles with new growth. A shedding breed self-clears; a labradoodle does not. Skip a bath and a brush cycle and the coat starts locking up on its own, usually first behind the ears, under the collar, or wherever a harness sits.
The fix is the same brush-before-water routine every wool-coated breed needs. A slicker to the skin, then a metal comb to check for resistance, before any water touches the dog. Water tightens whatever tangle is already there, so a bath skips the brush-out at real risk of making a small mat permanent. Dry with airflow and a brush working together, never left to air-dry, which sets new mats into a curly coat as it dries.
Don't bathe over an existing mat. Water tightens tangles instead of loosening them. Brush or comb a mat out before the water starts, or it usually ends up needing to be shaved rather than combed.
Australian labradoodles
Australian Labradoodle grooming: what's different.
An Australian Labradoodle is a specific, more standardized lineage, not just a Labrador crossed with a Poodle. Breeding programs recognized by the Australian Labradoodle Association of America added Cocker Spaniel, Curly-Coated Retriever, and Irish Water Spaniel lines to the original cross, aimed at a consistent, low-shedding temperament. That lineage still comes in the same wool, fleece, or hair coats already covered above.
The practical grooming difference shows up in the coat type. Fleece coats are easier to keep long, brush 2 to 3 times a week and a professional trim roughly 3 to 4 times a year. Wool coats mat faster and usually need a trim every 5 to 6 weeks. Our bath cadence above, 4 to 6 weeks for wool and fleece, holds for both, brushed out fully before any water touches the coat.

A smooth-coated hair-type labradoodle is a reasonable home job if you keep up with brushing. The wool and fleece coats are where a home bath gets harder: air-drying a curly coat without forced air tends to set the mats it was supposed to prevent.

Low shedding is the cause, not a separate problem. Hair that would fall out on a shedding breed instead stays in a labradoodle's coat, and any friction, a collar, a harness, lying on a dog bed, tangles it further over time. Regular brushing between baths is what actually prevents this, not the bath itself.
No. Water tightens a mat instead of loosening it, so a bath is the wrong tool for an existing tangle. Mats need to be brushed or cut out before the coat gets wet; bathing over one usually turns a fixable mat into one that has to be shaved.
Wool and fleece coats have more curl or wave and rarely shed visibly; hair coats are straighter, shed a bit, and feel closer to a Labrador's coat. If you're not sure, ask whoever does the haircut, since it changes both the bath interval and the brushing routine.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet).
