Every 4 to 6 weeks, and closer to 3 or 4 when the swimming starts. If you are here because your golden smells musty a day after every bath, that has a specific cause and a specific fix, and this guide covers both.
A dense undercoat beneath a feathered outer coat that is built to shrug off lake water. It also shrugs off towels.

The interval matters less than the dry. A golden that gets fully dried to the skin stays fresh between visits.

Goldens are water dogs, and the coat proves it: a water-repellent outer layer over an undercoat so dense it can stay damp for six or eight hours after a swim. A warm, damp undercoat sitting against the skin is a perfect place for yeast to grow, and yeast is the smell golden owners describe as musty, sour, or like corn chips. It is not lake water and it is not dirt. It is a low-grade culture living in the one layer of the dog that never fully dries.
This is why the smell survives home baths, and often gets worse the day after one. The bath rewets the undercoat, the towel and a quiet home dryer dry the outer coat, the surface feels dry to your hand, and underneath the damp layer goes right back to work. The fix is not stronger shampoo, it is drying all the way to the skin: a high-velocity dryer that parts the coat and pushes air down to the hide until nothing anywhere on the dog is damp. That is the single step home equipment cannot replicate on a golden's undercoat, and it is the step that actually ends the cycle.
If the smell survives a professional wash and full dry, stop washing and call your vet. Persistent odor on a clean, dry coat usually points to a skin infection, ear infection, or anal gland issue, and all three get worse while they are being bathed instead of treated.

A golden that swims weekly needs the undercoat washed and truly dried more often, or the musty smell moves in.
Rinse the chlorine or salt out with fresh water, then dry as far down as your equipment allows. Do not let the undercoat stay damp overnight.
Brushing keeps the undercoat open so air can reach the skin, and keeps the feathering on the legs and tail from tangling.
If your vet has prescribed a medicated bathing plan for skin issues, that plan wins over this one.
The wet half of the job is honestly doable at home. A golden that likes water will stand in a tub, the shampoo part is not complicated, and a fresh-water rinse after a swim is something every owner should do themselves the same day.
The dry half is where home baths lose. Getting a golden's undercoat dry to the skin takes a forced-air dryer and a solid stretch of close work, and a towel plus a quiet home dryer simply stops at the surface, which restarts the smell within a day. We booked Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash for our 90-lb German Shepherd, Koda, who hates the groomer. Ace came and gave my dog a much needed Pawdicure on my little Yorkie. He used the nail filer/buffer. I was very happy to see there was no clippers used.He was very professional and gentle with my girl. She usually hates her paws touched, but she was very calm with Ace. Ace showed up on time .was ready to go . my dog was scared but after he got started my dog calmed down and enjoyed her bath. Ace is very polite and respectful . i have a friend who uses Ace to and loves him ! .for the price and the care you canβt beat itβ¦!!! 10/10 no doubt !
Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
