How often should you bathe a dachshund?

The real problem
Three coat types, one long back that needs the right lift.
Dachshunds come in three coat varieties, smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired, and each one is easy to wash on its own terms. Smooth coats are the lowest maintenance of anything on this list. Wirehaired coats resist dirt well. Longhaired coats need more brushing to stay ahead of tangling in the feathering, but none of the three coat types is genuinely hard to bathe.
The real issue is the body underneath. A dachshund's long back and short legs make it more vulnerable to spinal injury than almost any other breed, and that risk shows up most during exactly the moments a bath creates: getting in and out of a tub, being lifted, or twisting to get positioned. The bath itself doesn't hurt the back. Awkward handling around it can.
Support, don't lift and twist. A dachshund should be supported along its full length whenever it's picked up or moved, never let its back curve or twist under its own weight. That rule applies at bath time as much as anywhere else.

Dachshund bathing questions.
Close, but not identical. Smooth and wirehaired coats can comfortably stretch to every 6-8 weeks. Longhaired dachshunds do better around 4-6 weeks, since the feathering on the ears and legs tangles faster than the short fur does.
Bathing itself is fine; the risk is in the handling around it, jumping in or out of a tub, being lifted awkwardly, or twisting to get positioned. We support the body properly through the whole visit, which matters more for this breed than for almost any other size dog.
Every 6-8 weeks is typical, same as a smooth coat. The wiry texture actually resists dirt fairly well, and hand-stripping (a groomer service, not something we do) handles the coat's texture between baths, not extra washing.
Short legs put the belly and chest closer to the ground than almost any other breed, so it picks up more dirt, dew, and mud on an ordinary walk. A quick belly-and-leg rinse between full baths is a normal and easy fix, no full wash needed.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
