The real problem
The ears, not the coat, are what actually goes wrong on a cocker.
A cocker spaniel's ear canal is long, hangs low, and is lined with hair, which is close to a perfect setup for trapping warm, moist air. That combination is exactly what yeast and bacteria need to take hold, and it's why cockers show up so often on lists of the most ear-infection-prone breeds. It isn't a hygiene failure or something an owner did wrong; it's the ear shape itself working against the dog.
Meanwhile the coat is fairly forgiving. Cocker skin runs oily by breed standard, which protects it reasonably well between the 4-6 week baths, and over-washing actually backfires by stripping the oil the skin needs. So the bath schedule stays moderate, but the ear check inside every single visit is non-negotiable. A quick look and clean at each wash catches a problem early, before it turns into a vet visit and a course of ear medication.
Sniff test between baths. A healthy cocker ear shouldn't have much of a smell. If yours does, a distinct off odor is often the earliest sign of an ear infection, showing up before the ear looks visibly red or inflamed.

Not strictly. A cocker's coat is washable at home with a degreasing shampoo and patience for the feathering. If you're comfortable checking and cleaning ears yourself at every bath, a home routine can absolutely work.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
