So the routine that works is built around warmth, not shampoo. Warm the room before the water touches the dog. Use water around body temperature, checked on the inside of your wrist. Keep the wash short and the handling quiet. Then do the part most home baths skip: dry the dog completely, down to the skin, before it leaves the warm room. A damp chihuahua air-drying in a cool house is the single most common way a routine bath turns into a shivering, miserable afternoon. Anxious small dogs do better at home. A busy salon means crates, dryers roaring, strange dogs, and hours of waiting, which is a lot to ask of a nervous ten year old chihuahua.
