The smaller the animal, the faster it loses heat, and a chihuahua is about as small as dogs get. The moment the coat is wet, the little insulation it has is gone, and the dog starts shedding body heat into the room. That is why so many chihuahuas shake through baths: it is not drama, it is often genuine cold, with stress stacked on top. Many Bay Area chihuahuas are also seniors with thin skin and less muscle to generate warmth, which makes the problem worse, not better, with age.

So the routine that works is built around warmth, not shampoo. Warm the room before the water touches the dog. Use water around body temperature, checked on the inside of your wrist. If your dog is young, calm, and tolerates water, a careful home bath with warm water and a full dry is a perfectly good job, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
