How often should you bathe a border collie?
Every 6 to 8 weeks for a typical pet lifestyle, every 4 to 6 for a dog that hikes or runs trails regularly. The activity level of your particular dog matters more for this breed than for almost any other on our list.

The real problem
A working coat that earns its dirt on Bay Area trails.
Border collies were bred to work outdoors all day, and the coat reflects it: a weather-resistant double coat, rough or smooth, that genuinely repels a fair amount of dirt and moisture on its own. For a border collie that spends most of its time in a yard and on the couch, that resistance means the standard 6-8 week bath interval holds up fine, and washing much more often than that strips oils the coat needs for no real gain.
The Bay Area version of this breed is often a different story. A dog doing regular off-leash hikes, trail runs, or dry-brush scrambles picks up dust, foxtails, and ground-in dirt at a rate a backyard dog never approaches, and the weather-resistant coat doesn't shrug that off the way it does ordinary yard dirt. For those dogs, tightening to every 4-6 weeks keeps the coat and skin ahead of what the trail puts into it, rather than letting six weeks of accumulated dust and debris sit against the skin.
Brushing still does the daily work. No bath schedule replaces regular brushing on a working/herding breed coat; it's what actually keeps the shed and the weather resistance intact between visits.

The honest answer
Does a border collie need professional bathing?
For a lower-activity backyard dog, a home bath with a hose and a good towel dry is a reasonable job at the standard interval. The coat isn't difficult to wash.

A border collie that's mostly a yard-and-couch dog can comfortably stretch to every 8 weeks; one doing regular trail runs or off-leash hikes in Bay Area dry brush and mud picks up enough dirt and debris to justify every 4-6 weeks instead.
Yes. The double coat is weather-resistant by design, meaning it repels a fair amount of dirt and moisture on its own, and washing more than every 4-6 weeks even for an active dog can strip the oils that make it work that way.
It's a real double coat built for outdoor work, so a moderate year-round shed plus two seasonal blowouts (spring, fall) is normal, not a health problem. Regular brushing, stepped up during a blowout, is the main tool for managing it; bathing more often doesn't replace brushing for this breed.

Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
