Most goldendoodles need a salon haircut about every 8 weeks. What decides whether that appointment is a trim or a shave-down is everything that happens in between: line brushing at home, quick cleanups, and one proper bath with a full blow-dry at the halfway point. We do that bath. We do not cut, and we will say so every time.
The haircut: body length, face and eyes, feet, sanitary trim. Scissors and clippers.
Brush-out to the skin, warm bath, conditioner, full blow-dry brushed straight, nails, ears. No scissors.
Line brushing with a slicker, then a metal comb check, plus the quick cleanups below.
The bath and cadence logic behind these numbers is on our goldendoodle bathing guide.
A golden retriever sheds its loose hair onto the floor. A poodle's curl catches loose hair and holds it. A goldendoodle usually gets some of each: enough golden in the coat to keep producing loose hair, and enough curl to trap all of it. That trapped hair rubs against the living coat every time the dog moves, and friction turns it into felt. Wavy, fleece-like goldendoodle coats tangle a little slower than tight curly ones, but every version mats in the same places.
Soft, fine hair plus constant scratching and head shaking. The first mat on most goldendoodles.
The strap rubs the same band of coat all day. Take the collar off to brush under it.
Every step folds this coat against itself. Lift each front leg to reach it.
Sitting and lying down press this area flat, where the golden side's thicker hair tangles first.
Tools: a slicker brush and a metal comb with fine and wide teeth. Work one section at a time, starting with the four hot spots above, 10 to 15 minutes per session on a standard-size dog.
Start low on a leg. Hold the hair above up and out of the way so you can see a thin line of skin.
Light pressure, short strokes. The slicker should touch the base of the hair, not scrape the skin.
Work upward in rows until you reach the top of the section. That is line brushing: layer by layer instead of over the top.
If the comb slides from skin to tip, the section is done. If it catches partway down, go back with the slicker on that spot.
The rule for every cleanup: whatever gets wet gets dried and combed the same day. Water is not the problem. Water left to dry in a curly coat is.
Rinse the feet in a shallow tub of lukewarm water, towel them, then finish dry with a hair dryer on cool while you comb. Damp leg hair left to air-dry is where next week's mats come from.
Wipe the beard with a damp cloth after meals and comb it through. Food and water left in the beard is the usual source of the doodle face smell.
Dry the whole coat fully the same day and comb it out. A soaked goldendoodle that dries curled up in its bed can felt in one night.
A damp cloth and a comb handle most messes. Keeping that area short is a haircut item, so ask your groomer for a sanitary trim at each cut.
The general doodle version of this routine, for any doodle cross, is in our doodle grooming between cuts guide.

Flat by size: minis usually $75, most standards $95, big standards over 60 lbs $115. More on the service itself on the doodle bath and brush-out page.
A few loose tangles behind the ears are exactly what our brush-out is for. A coat that is matted tight to the skin across the body is not. Water shrinks a mat as it dries and pulls it tighter, so bathing over one makes it permanent, and brushing out solid felt hurts the dog. If we find that, we tell you before we start, and the right next step is a clipper shave-down at your groomer. It is the kind choice, and the coat grows back.
Not sure which side your dog is on? Our dematting guide walks through the pinch test and what can be saved at home.
Tell the schedule builder when your groomer's next haircut is, and it places the halfway bath and the brushing days as real dates.

I run Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash myself — I’m the one who shows up at your door. Every visit is one dog at a time in the van at your curb: warm water, a full brush-out and a proper dry, with no salon drive and no cage waiting. Big dogs, heavy shedders and nervous seniors are the reason this service exists.
What our customers say
SUCH a great - and easy! - experience! Asa was immediately responsive (I love when businesses actually answer their phone!), worked Moose in within 24 hours, was communicative throughout, bought unscented products specifically for us, did a great job with my 12 year old doodle … all in all: amazing service!
Ace at Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash was absolutely wonderful with my senior dog. He was so gentle and patient with him, which meant everything to me given his age — I could tell he genuinely cared about his comfort throughout the whole process. Beyond the excellent care, Ace was warm, loving, and clearly an animal lover at heart, while also being completely professional from start to finish. It's rare to find someone who balances that kind of tenderness with real expertise, and my dog came out looking and smelling great without a hint of stress. Highly recommend Ace and Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash.
Ace was great with my 3 small dogs. They got washed and towel dried, their ears checked, their nails trimmed. One star off because he trimmed one nail too far and it bled for a long time, plus distressed my already anxious dog. Important to know that this service isn't van-based (yet). Ace brings a portable wash station to set up outside. He brings his own water and supplies. He doesn't do any hair cuts, just basic wash and towel dry. I'll call him again in the future!
Ace did a great job with our little old chihuahua mix. Our appointment was for the evening and he came prepared with warm water, and made our sure our dog was comfortable the entire time. Don't let the lack of reviews on yelp scare you away, his prices are good, and he takes time to ensure that good work is done.
He did such an amazing job with my dog! He came out looking so nice, clean, and well-groomed, but what stood out to me most was how happy and comfortable he seemed afterward. You can really tell he was treated with care throughout the entire process. I'm extremely pleased with how everything turned out and would definitely recommend him!

We booked Bay Area Mobile Dog Wash for our 90-lb German Shepherd, Koda, who hates the groomer. Ace parked the van right in our driveway in Willow Glen, walked her up the ramp himself — no lifting, no cage, no other dogs — and I watched the whole wash from my doorstep. Bath, nails, ears, and she came back inside dry and calm. Flat $95 exactly as the website said, no surprise charges. We've already booked next month. 😊❤️
